The European AI regulation is becoming fully operational

The main part of the Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 — AI Act becomes effective on August 2, 2026.

Systems designed to assist a judicial authority in:

  • researching and interpreting facts or the law; ;
  • the application of the law to a specific situation; ;
  • the preparation of a judicial decision,

are, in principle, classified among the high-risk AI systems. Tools that are purely administrative or ancillary in nature may not fall under this classification.

The main requirements relate to risk management, data quality, traceability, documentation, cybersecurity, and, above all, the effective human oversight. A judge cannot simply serve as a validator of an algorithmic response. European Regulation on AI, the Commission's official calendar.

Point to watch: a so-called European project «Digital Omnibus on AI» envisages simplifications and certain adjustments to the timeline, but it remains necessary to distinguish this proposal from the law currently in effect.
